This shot of the American Bison was taken on my way out of the preserve one day. The sun was setting and I rounded a corner. They were right there. The light was stunning. For such big animals, they were calm and quiet. They looked so content and peaceful.
I shot photos with concealed excitement. I was so glad to preserve part of history through this photograph. Bison have been hunted to near extinction and through efforts such as nature preserves, their numbers are growing.
My family is lucky to live an hour away from an amazing Elk and Bison nature preserve. Western Kentucky is home to Land Between the Lakes, and it’s home to the Elk and Bison preserve. We paid $5 to drive through this super cool preserve. People are to stay in the car if the bison are within 200 feet of the car. When they aren’t nearby you can stay within 10 feet of your vehicle. In those times, I’ve crept into the grass with my long lens. The photographic pursuit of the hunt is thrilling, and I’m always on the quest for a great shot, close up or far away.
The American Bison is a cool symbol of our wild United States. The Bison is often confused with Buffalo and while they are easy to confuse, Kentucky was never home to Buffalo.
